Liz Yelling
Age: 32
Events: 10,000m, cross country and Marathon.
Lucozade Sport’s inspirational new running ambassador, Liz has been a mainstay of the Great Britain senior team for a decade. A member of the Athens Olympic team she is now a fully focused marathon runner following an outstanding bronze medal at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Whilst continuing to compete in a variety of world class events across the globe, Liz is also passionate about helping others achieve their own health, lifestyle and performance goals.
One of the UK’s finest female athletes, Liz quickly made a name for herself on the cross country circuit. Having won her first National medal in 1997 she made her International debut at both the World and European Champions in 1999 placing a magnificent fourth in the latter. Subsequent GB cross country teams have rarely competed without Liz and she has won two bronze medals at world level and one Gold, three silver and one bronze at the European Championships. On the domestic scene, Liz won her third English National title in March 2007 to follow victories in 2001 and 2002.
Always destined for success as a road runner, in 2001 Liz won the UK Half marathon title before making her marathon debut in 2003 in Berlin placing a highly encouraging eighth. She then competed in the furnace like conditions prevalent at the Athens Olympics and finished first Briton in a creditable 25th, ahead of many athletes with faster personal bests. Liz’s third marathon has been her most rewarding yet as she hit peak form at the right time to win a bronze medal for England at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne twelve months ago. In March 2007 Liz ran the 4th fastest ever time by a British woman over the half marathon distance to win the Bath Half in 69.28s and then in April she finished a superb 8th place in a star studded elite London Marathon field in a personal best 2hrs 30min44s.
Over the coming season, Liz will be working closely with Lucozade Sport and the Lucozade Sport Science Academy to pass on her experiences as a top class international runner, providing unique insights into the world of endurance running.
